The rail yard in Snoqualmie, Wash., is an iron jungle. Steam locomotives, dripping moss and rust, are parked bumper to bumper on a quarter-mile stretch of track. The lineup includes coal and freight cars. A paved footpath affords close-up views. I got the shot above by standing on a short step ladder behind a chain-link fence. The trains locomotives are impressive even in decay. I can picture them in their prime belching smoke and lurching across the Cascade Range. Trains are celebrated in this town, a half hour drive from Seattle. The railway museum here is housed in a train depot built in 1890. It offers weekend train rides spring through fall.
