The railroad bridge in Pine City, Wash., was the graffiti target of two rival high schools in 2017. Students from St. John-Endicott named it Eagle Country after its school mascot. Students from Rosalia responded. They painted a B in front of Eagle. Then it was Beagle Country. Pine City, a virtual ghost town in the Palouse wheat lands, is otherwise a peaceful place. When I stopped here all I heard were songbirds. Lots of them. Then I met a retired couple.Their son worked in the town's only operating business, a grain elevator. And they were charming. When I asked who owns the Uncle Sam mailbox down the street the wife blurts "That's ours! I need to give it a fresh coat of paint." The old church was damaged in a fire three years after my 2017 visit.
