The creepy, crusty DeVore Motel in the wheat farming town of Lind, Wash., still is standing. But has not aged well. The units above were built in 1938 and are closed now. More rooms were built in 1946 across the street, including a house. In 1980 a fire destroyed a unit on the end, leaving only the foundation. Rooms ranged from $5 to $7.50 per day and $10 for the house unit. Ellen DeVore was 85 when she sold the motel in 2005 to Gene and Linda Morgan, whom I met when I stopped here in 2020. They told me they had put it up for sale. It sold in 2021 and will be a halfway house for inmates who have served their time.
