The rotary phone got my attention because I'm old enough to have used one. It was on display outside a Snohomish, Wash., antique store. The owner told me it provoked a comical reaction from a teen who stopped to inspect it. He had no idea how it worked. He moved his fingers over the rotary face as if it were a touch screen on a smart phone. Kids today! First Street, the town's historic business district, is great to visit if you like junk – good junk – like the phone. Antique shops crowd both sides of the street. The New Brunswick Hotel, built in 1905, anchors one end of First Street. The building was converted to apartments after a 1989 fire.
