This retired delivery truck in an Everett, Wash., neighborhood is not near a river. But it reminds me of an SNL comedy sketch: Chris Farley, playing motivational speaker Matt Foley, warns teens not to end up like him – divorced and "living in a van down by the river." This van looks like it was pulled from the river. It is streaked with rust. Overlake Memorial Hospital is painted on its sides. It looks like a van the fictional Foley might have called home. But this home is a rat's nest. It's dirty, dingy and disgusting. But that's the beauty of it. It's a wonderful wreck. It has been parked here for years, maybe decades. It must still be running because one time it was gone. I came back months later and it was back on the street, same spot. Did someone drive it? Was it towed away? The mystery continues.
