The primitive road, flanked by wheat fields, is made of hard-packed dirt and gravel. It leaves Highway 2 on the Waterville Plateau in Washington state and leads to the abandoned farm above. The windmill, perched atop a pump house, supports a large bird nest between its wooden legs. The babies were squawking when I approached with my film gear. I was hoping they weren't eagles with a protective mama nearby. I found the barn with the striped roof a mile down the road. I've seen only one other in the region. It's located a few miles away.
