I'm drawn to neon signs and outdoor wall murals. They are expressons of art – even with coats of rust or dirt. Letter fonts also get my attenton for obvious reasons – I was a sports page designer at The Seattle Times for 24 years. I used different headline fonts to dress up centerpiece stories on our cover. I'm also drawn to other art expressions like the 9-11 memorial in Arlington, a small town north of Seattle. I love the peeling theater sign in Lind, a wheat farming community in eastern Washington. The Empire opened in 1950, closed in 1980. The motel sign is in Everett, a mid-sized city north of Seattle. The housing units have been torn down. The motel did appear in the TV remake of The Fugitive in 2000.
