I love exploring the high desert in north-central Washington. There's a surprise around every bend. Like the pioneer homestead above. You navigate a dirt road for a couple miles, and there it is: a weather-beaten shell of a farmhouse surrounded by wheat fields. When I got out of the car baby birds in the roof started squawking. Then a large deer came out of a field, stopped in the road and made eye contact with me. What an amazing creature. If you continue east on Highway 2 you'll pass the motel sign in Coulee City. I found the patriotic bunting at an antique shop in Waterville to the west. The town's main attraction is the historic hotel, where I spent the night. I sat on the front porch at dusk listening to big-band music playing softly inside the lobby.
