This International truck, retired on a side street in Stanwood, Wash., is a jungle. It rests on a bed of tall grass and weeds, and thorns fill the engine and cab. It is one of three rusty relics I capture on a 15-exposure roll of medium-format film. The rust-streaked sign overlooks Interstate 5 near Conway. A fire destroyed the vacant motel building in 2014. From here I take I-5 south and exit at Smokey Point, which leads to a farm near the freeway. I spot a grain silo with the year 1953 painted on its side. I was born in 1955. I'll say what's obvious: We've been around a while.
