The towns of Diamond, Endicott, Winona and Benge are small dots on MapQuest. The dots are connected by a yellow thread, representing a two-lane road in the Palouse wheatlands in Washington. The railroad underpass above doubles as wildlife shelter on hot days. Sometimes you'll catch deer huddling inside. They dart into a field when a vehicle approaches. On a trip through here last spring my Honda CR-V was a bug and dirt magnet. I made the mistake of washing it before I left. The silo below is located in Winona, a virtual ghost town. The only time it comes to life is during wheat harvest. My iPhone took a better shot here than my film camera.
