The railway loops into Stanwood, Wash., and disappears in overgrown

weeds. A local told me the tracks used to service trains carrying lumber from a nearby mill, which is closed. Now it's a boneyard for rusty, banged up railcars. Several ducks cruised past me in a drainage ditch. The calm was interrupted only by the muffled roar of a passing freight train on the main line nearby. I returned weeks later and some of the railcars were gone.
