The economic boom in Seattle is having a ripple effect across the region. Skyrocketing home prices are driving buyers north to towns like Marysville. It is starting to lose its small town identity but many of the small businesses, like Tire King on State Street, have survived. The wave of growth hasn't caught up with Stanwood, a farming community 20 miles north of Marysville. A lot of land remains undeveloped but probably not for long. The downtown economy looks hit and miss. Thrifty Foods and the Viking Restaurant have closed, yet a mom and pop auto dealership remains open. I found the carnival ride mothballed at the Stanwood fairgrounds.
