The towns of Diamond, Endicott, Winona and Benge are small dots on MapQuest. The dots are connected by a yellow thread, representing a two-lane road. I followed the thread for 55 miles in a Honda Civic packed with film gear. I turned off State Route 26 near Colfax, Wash., and entered a land frozen in time – ghost towns, abandoned farms and derelict windmills. I actually saw more wildlife than people, including a deer taking shelter from the heat beneath a railroad underpass. When it saw my car appoach it darted from the tunnel and through a farmer's field, leaping gracefully through tall grass. Wish I had captured it on film.
